Why Pilates Is on the Rise for Men (And Why They Keep Coming Back)

For a long time, Pilates carried an unfair reputation as being “not for men” — usually from people who had never actually tried it. That perception is changing fast. More men are discovering that Pilates is challenging, surprisingly athletic, and incredibly effective for strength, mobility, posture and long-term joint health. At BodyRight Physiotherapy, we’ve been hosting men’s Pilates classes for years now, alongside mixed classes — and demand has grown so much that we currently have three men’s classes running strong. Once men start, they tend to guard their place fiercely.

Men’s-only Pilates classes have a distinct feel. Every group is different, but there’s often a mix of good-natured competitiveness, plenty of laughs, and a strong sense of camaraderie. What often surprises people most is how much the men value the quieter side of the work too — the focus, the rhythm of movement with breath, and what many describe as a kind of “meditation through movement.” It’s a rare hour in the week where phones are off, minds are focused, and the body gets full attention.

From a physical perspective, Pilates addresses many of the issues men commonly struggle with. Men tend to have reduced flexibility compared to women, particularly through the hips, spine and shoulders. Over time, this can affect posture, balance and movement efficiency, contributing to back pain, stiffness, and recurring aches and pains. Pilates works to restore mobility while building controlled strength, helping men move better rather than just push harder — something that pays off both in sport and everyday life.

We regularly hear from men who notice improvements in their golf swing, better rotation and control through their spine, or feeling more prepared before heading off for a ski trip. For others, the biggest win is more fundamental: a back that finally feels strong, supported and free again. Many men attend classes twice or even three times a week, often combining a men’s-only class with mixed groups, because they feel the benefits stack quickly when the work is consistent.

One of the most rewarding aspects for our team is seeing men rebuild confidence in their bodies after major health events. We have men attending who have had joint replacements or spinal or  prostate surgery, and who tell us that Pilates has taken their rehabilitation to the next level. The controlled, progressive nature of the exercises allows strength, coordination and trust in the body to return — without fear, force or pressure to perform.

And while we rarely ever need to mention the words pelvic floor in class, the subtle emphasis on breath, deep support and coordination quietly does a huge amount for men’s health. This work supports spinal and joint health, digestion, continence and erectile function — all without awkward conversations or targeted drills. Just like with women, it’s not about endlessly “strengthening,” but about balance, timing and control. In a well-designed Pilates class, these systems are trained naturally, simply by moving well.

At BodyRight Physiotherapy, our Pilates is grounded in clinical understanding and years of experience working with men of all ages and abilities. Whether someone is returning to exercise after injury or surgery, looking to improve performance in sport, or simply wanting to feel better in their body, Pilates offers a smart, sustainable way forward. And judging by how quickly our men’s classes fill — and how reluctant people are to give up their spot — it’s clearly doing something right.
